Electrowinning uses an electric current to plate dissolved metal directly onto an electrode, and it is one of the primary tools the mining and recycling industries use to pull gold, silver, and copper out of solution efficiently. The scale of what still gets missed is significant. The UN's Global E-Waste Monitor estimated $91 billion in metal value sitting in the world's e-waste in 2022, including roughly $19 billion in copper, $15 billion in gold, and $16 billion in iron. Only about $28 billion of that was actually recovered through documented collection and recycling that year, meaning something like $62 billion worth of recoverable metal ended up landfilled, incinerated, or otherwise unaccounted for. Higher Metal Recovery Rates

Gold and silver recovery works differently than copper. Instead of an acid leach, it starts with cyanide, and the industry has developed a couple of ways to pull the dissolved metal back out of solution. Some operations still use an older method, the Merrill-Crowe process, which precipitates the metal out with zinc. Increasingly, though, plants are moving toward a process where the metal is captured on activated carbon and then finished with electrowinning, largely because it handles large volumes of dilute solution more easily and works across a wider range of conditions.

Platinum Group Metals, platinum, palladium, and related metals, are a different story. They do not use the same cyanide chemistry, and traditional smelting still handles most PGM recovery worldwide rather than a leaching-and-electrowinning process. Where electrowinning is gaining ground fastest is in recycling: spent automotive catalytic converters, which contain some of the highest PGM concentrations found anywhere, now account for more than half of Europe's PGM supply, and hydrometallurgical methods, electrowinning among them, are how that recycled metal gets separated out.

What ties all of this together is that gold, silver, and PGMs are worth far more per unit of solution than copper is, so even a small loss in recovery efficiency is real money left behind, not a rounding error.
